SEPTEMBER LEAVES

Think about everybody lying to you about their life. Not trusting you with little things in life that has happened. Nobody wants to talk to you and if they do all they do is not tell you the truth. You don’t know why they are lying to you but they won’t stop. Well in the short story “The Lie” written by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Eli a boy going to a boarding school lies about getting accepted. Everybody in his family has gone there, his grandparents, great grandparents, and even great great grandparents. He didn’t pass the exam needed to get into the school. Once Eli’s parents found out about that Eli’s dad asked for something. So you shouldn’t lie because the truth always is found out.

To begin with, the lie that Eli had told was completely unnecessary. He could have just told his parents the truth and nothing would be that different. His parents would be furious though and he would be in a lot of trouble. Eli failed the test and his dad asked for something which is apparently bad because they gave a lot of money to Whitehill School. Eli lied about how he felt to his parents as well. Other than that he didn’t lie.

Equally important, is his parents, who seem to think he’s the best. All parents think they’re kid(s) are the best. Eli’s parents always thought that he would make into the school. Eli didn’t and his parent’s dad tried to force Eli into the school. His parents cared more about him getting into the school more than Eli himself. His parents thought that they could make him go to the school because they donated a lot of money.

In Addition, the school must be a very important school. Being able to teach kids and most of them become successful. Eli’s dad was one of those kids that were successful. Dr. Remenzel made it to riches when he left the school. He was a mechanic before he went to the school. Now he is sending Eli no matter what. Eli’s dad wanted to send Eli to Whitehill but he couldn’t convince someone to let him in. So Eli never went to Whitehill School.

Finally, the Remenzels finally gave in to Eli not being able to go to Whitehill. The family asked for something and that kind of gave away their honor to the school. Donating to the school but not asking for anything in return. They will never go to that school again. The Remenzels will have to go to a different school from now on. So that’s why telling a lie is a bad thing to do. The lie you tell will always be found out no matter how hard you try to hide it.
